Is Medina the drop-in-guy of the WSL?

Gabriel Medinas drop ins

This question comes up slowly, because the bad drop-ins of world class surfer Gabriel Medina are getting more frequently. Is this his new competition tactic? But does he really need to earn points through unfair drop-ins instead of showing his own skills?

In the first video, Gabriel Medina droped in against Caio Ibelli at the Billabong Pipemasters 2019. Again a very unfair move from The Surf Professional Medina.

In the second video, Medina exploits his Wave Priority at the Billabong Pipemasters 2017 against Kelly Slater to block him, so that Kelly could make no further points. And although Medina clearly did not want to take this wave at first and Kelly Slater takes the wave much earlier and is about to surf a perfect deep-barrel.

Can you call this behavior of Medina fair competition tactics? What do you think? Write it in the comments below.

In the third video below you can see how Gabriel Medina, in 2016 in a Fiji Pro competition at Cloudbreak, drops into the wave of his competitor Jordy Smith really bad.

The question is whether Gabriel Medina actually deliberately drops into the waves of his competitors in competitions in order to prevent them from collecting further points and to score own points instead. Whether this unfair tactical behavior in a surfing competition is permissible at all, must decide the judges in every single case.
